Busan partnership for effective development cooperation re-inforces commitment to gender equality |

World leaders concluded the 4th High Level Forum on 1st December with an outcome document setting new horizons for the development community. The "new partnership for effective development cooperation" recalls that gender equality is more than ever a necessary ingredient for development effectiveness:
"20. We must accelerate our efforts to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women through development programmes grounded in country priorities, recognising that gender equality and women’s empowerment are critical to achieving development results. Reducing gender inequality is both an end in its own right and a prerequisite for sustainable and inclusive growth. As we redouble our efforts to implement existing commitments we will:

Why gender equality for development effectiveness?
Achieving our internationally agreed development goals requires accelerated progress on gender equality and women’s empowerment. A growing body of evidence shows that empowering women and reducing gender gaps in health, education, labor markets, and other areas is associated with lower poverty, higher economic growth, greater agricultural productivity, better nutrition and education of children, and a variety of other outcomes.

Position On The Proposed Busan Joint Action Plan On Gender Equality And Development |
|
Women’s organisations from around the world have chosen not to endorse the current Busan Joint Action Plan on Gender Equality and Development that US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton has launched.
The group is releasing a position statement on the plan which expresses concern about the overwhelming focus on promoting women as vehicles of economic growth, rather than rights holders in the plan. Women’s Groups who have been engaged in the BetterAid civil society platform are particularly concerned about the plan’s narrow focus on developing economies rather than developing women’s enjoyment of rights.
