WIDE and UNIFEM organise a Consultation on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Print E-mail
WIDE and UNIFEM are organizing a Consultation on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: Challenges and opportunities ahead in the new European aid environment on 7th May 2008 in Brussels, Belgium. At this event, sponsored by Spanish Agency of International Cooperation for Development (AECID) and Action Aid International, approximately 50-60 stakeholders from civil society organisations (CSOs), the European Commission, the European Parliament, United Nations agencies and EU Member States’ missions will convene to exchange analyses and recommendations from a gender equality and women’s empowerment perspective, on the run up to the September 2008 Accra High Level Forum III and the November 2008 Doha Review International Conference of the Monterrey Consensus.

This Consultation is building on the “International Consultation of Women’s Organizations and Networks and Aid Effectiveness” convened by AWID, WIDE and UNIFEM that took place in January 2008, in Ottawa, Canada, and the resulting concrete recommendations. It is also part of a broader process being organised by different CSOs, to ensure that the civil society perspectives, experiences and proposals are informing the implementation of the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness and the Monterrey Consensus. The program will include thought-provoking plenaries, plus breakout sessions for discussion, as well as sessions to exchange experiences on the way the new aid environment could contribute to make progress towards gender equality and the eradication of poverty.

The consultation is by invitation only. Space is limited, and there is no funding available to support travel costs of participants. A report on the consultation will be produced and shared widely with stakeholders.
