GenderMatters News n. 2 - EC/UN Partnership: Two Years Down the Road

Over nearly two years of promoting gender equality in the context of development, peace and security, the teams of the EC/UN Partnership on Gender Equality for Development and Peace[1] across the continents have accumulated vast experience: the EC/UN Partners have studied the role of gender equality in development and in the mechanisms of aid delivery, and have consulted a variety of actors involved in development practice. They have also been providing technical inputs to partners willing to address gender equality concerns in the mainstream development processes, and working in tandem with governments, donors and civil society organisations to champion the gender justice goal. This second issue of the GenderMatters Newsletter is dedicated to these success stories.

UNIFEM opens the Newsletter with a review of progress and a reflection on the way forward for the twelve teams working around the globe. Next, ITC/ILO reviews the outcomes of the International Labour Conference held in June 2009, which addressed the issue of "Gender Equality at the Heart of Decent Work". Following that, a representative of the Delegation of the European Commission in Kyrgyzstan and a representative of civil society exchange news and views on their work on promoting gender equality in the education sector. The EC/UN team in Ghana then describes how the Multi-Stakeholder Group on Gender Equality for Development and Peace is progressing. There follows a review by the Honduras Country Team who have contributed to the design of the Honduran Plan for Gender Equality and Equity. Finally, after winning an article contest Glenda Muzenda, a South African participant in the online course "The Global Development Agenda: tools for gender-sensitive planning and implementation", narrates her e-learning experience.

[1] The overall aim of the Programme, which is being implemented in twelve pilot countries - Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Honduras, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Nicaragua, Papua New Guinea, Suriname, and the Ukraine - is to ensure that gender equality and women's human rights are fully incorporated into national development processes and in the co-operation programmes supported by the European Commission (EC). The EC, UNIFEM, and the International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITC/ILO) are collaborating to implement the Partnership. Editorial Team: M.
